Rottweilers are a large, powerful dog breed with a rich history and distinctive characteristics. Here’s what I know about them:
Origins and History Rottweilers originated in Germany, specifically in the town of Rottweil (hence the name). They descended from Roman drover dogs that were used to herd cattle and pull carts. In medieval times, they were known as “Rottweil butchers’ dogs” because butchers used them to drive cattle to market and guard their money pouches.
Physical Characteristics
- Large, robust build with males typically weighing 95-135 pounds and females 80-100 pounds
- Height ranges from 22-27 inches at the shoulder
- Short, dense black coat with distinctive rust/mahogany markings on the chest, legs, face, and above the eyes
- Broad head with a strong jaw and confident expression
- Naturally docked tail (though tail docking is banned in many countries)
Temperament and Personality
- Confident, courageous, and self-assured
- Loyal and devoted to their family
- Naturally protective and can be excellent guard dogs
- Calm and composed when properly socialized
- Intelligent and eager to work
- Can be aloof with strangers but shouldn’t be aggressive without cause
